Thinking About Retiring in South Carolina?

rainbow row charleston south carolina

South Carolina has emerged as a top destination for retirees across the U.S. Here’s why:

  • No Tax on Social Security Benefits
  • Deduction of up to $15,000 for other types of retirement income
  • Low Property Taxes: Among the lowest in the nation
  • Mild Winters: Average winter temperatures in the 50s
  • Coastal Beauty: 187 miles of coastline and picturesque towns
  • Southern Hospitality: Known for its friendly communities and slower pace of life

Fun Facts & Stats:

  •  South Carolina ranks in the top 10 states for inbound migration of retirees (Source: United Van Lines, 2023).
  • The state offers over 47 state parks and 9 national wildlife refuges—perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Charleston, SC has been voted the #1 small U.S. city for over a decade by Condé Nast Traveler.
  • Over 18% of South Carolina’s population is aged 65 or older (U.S. Census Bureau).
  • Cost of living is ~10% below the national average in many areas.

Even More Fun Facts & Stats:

  •  The state fruit is the peach. Sorry, Georgia. We actually produce more peaches than you do. (Mic drop.)
  •  We have a town named Due West. You can’t make that up. It’s just west. Not too far, not too east. Just... due west.
  •  Our lakes have their own ghost stories. Lake Murray is said to be haunted. But don’t worry—our ghosts are polite and possibly also retired.
  •  You can legally eat boiled peanuts on a boat while wearing seersucker. It’s not in the Constitution, but it feels like it should be.
  •  The Angel Oak Tree is 400+ years old. And yes, people still line up to hug it.
  • "Bless your heart" -  is used sarcastically or condescendingly to imply someone is naive, foolish, or ignorant. It can be a way of saying, "I'm not going to argue with you" or "You're really not very smart". The tone is crucial, and the speaker might use a soft, sweet tone while actually meaning the opposite.
  •  Bill Murray – Yes, that Bill Murray. Lives part-time in Charleston and sometimes just shows up at bars or wedding receptions.
  •  Stephen Colbert – Grew up on James Island. His sarcasm was likely forged in Charleston humidity.
  •  Darius Rucker – Hootie himself is a Charleston native and a proud South Carolinian.
  •  The Notebook (2004) – Most of this Nicholas Sparks classic was shot in Charleston. Bonus: The famous canoe scene? Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner.
  •  Forrest Gump (1994) – Parts were filmed in Beaufort and on nearby islands.
  •  The Patriot (2000) – Mel Gibson galloped through Revolutionary War-era South Carolina… or at least the movie version of it.
  •  Outer Banks (Netflix) – Though set in North Carolina, it's filmed mostly in Charleston and the Lowcountry. (Locals are slightly annoyed about this.)
  •  The Righteous Gemstones – This HBO comedy series, created by and starring Danny McBride, follows a dysfunctional family of televangelists. Filming locations include Charleston's Citadel Mall, North Charleston Coliseum, and various spots in Mount Pleasant and West Ashley.
  •  Southern Charm – A Bravo reality series that delves into the personal and professional lives of Charleston's elite, showcasing the city's historic homes and social scene.

Whether you’re drawn to the charming streets of Charleston, the golf courses of Hilton Head, or the lakeside retreats near Greenville; South Carolina offers an exceptional mix of affordability, accessibility, and lifestyle appeal.
